Building Healthy Students The George E. Washington Way!

It’s a New Year and George E. Washington is working hard to create a healthy learning environment for students and faculty.  “I am passionate about making a difference in the life of a child, including their health.  I actively support and monitor this initiative so my staff takes it seriously” shares Janice Owens, principal.

Empowering healthy choices are evident
School Wide:

· All students and staff participate in the exercise DVD every morning and afternoon.

· Slushies sold during lunch are now made from real fruit.

· School staff do not drink  sodas in the presence of students.  Cakes, cookies, candy, high sugar drinks are no longer options for birthday and party celebrations. A list of the school’s approved healthy snacks is provided to all staff.

· Cookies are offered as part of the lunch menu no more than two times per month.

Healthy choices are also evident in the classroom.  This school’s administration encourages the link between health and academic success through K - 5 Classroom Instruction.

· A para-pro has been hired to teach every student, using the HealthMPowers instructional resources.

· ‘Lil Eagle 2nd grade students are currently practicing their play  entitled, “My Pyramid Story”.

· After studying about the heart, 4th and 5th grade students wrote persuasive letters to relatives emphasizing the importance of a smoke free life.

The real proof was recently seen when a student asked the administrative team why they were selling donuts as a fundraiser if they were a healthy school… the fund raiser was promptly cancelled!

Keep up the great work George E. Washington!
